Greenwood carving involves using hand tools - saw, axe, knife - to harvest, split, and shape fresh wood gathered from the landscape around us.
In this class we will create wooden wall hooks for hanging coats, bags, hats, tools, or any other hangable item! We will begin with a saw and axe to select and shape tree branches into strong hooks. The majority of our time will focus on carving the surface of these hooks, discovering the knife skills and knowledge of wood needed to create smooth surfaces. The straight-blade carving knife is the foundational tool for carving, used more than any other. Through understanding how to use this tool skillfully, one can unlock a much deeper understanding of other edge tools. Adding holes to prepare the hook for screwing to a wall will finish off the day’s work.
Tool safety, techniques for use, and maintenance will be discussed for each tool type we use in our projects.
Each participant can anticipate completing one hook, though we may start additional projects and explore decorative carving styles as time allows. Importantly, each person should leave with the knowledge necessary to carve many more hooks at home. Wall hooks are an excellent first-time carving project. If you’re new to whittling, this might be a great place to begin your carving journey!
No prior experience is necessary to participate. Class is appropriate for participants age 15+. Any participant under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult also participating in the class. Please reach out with any questions.
